The Ghana national museum was first opened in 1957 with exhibits and artifact that portrays the history and culture of Ghana. The structure which is under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board like other museums in Ghana was left to its fate after several years of no improper maintenance and had to go through a major refurbishment.
The national museum of Ghana which was closed as far back as 2015 for renovation work to begin has finally been opened after over seven years of rehabilitation. The facility was opened over the weekend by the president of the Republic of Ghana his excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo in conjunction with the tourism minister Dr. Awal Mohammed. The minister further encouraged people to visit the museum as a way of promoting domestic tourism as international arrivals have decreased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which saw more than a 90% decrease in foreign arrivals in the country in the year 2020. t it however expected that international tourists arrivals will increase significantly in December 2022 with events such as the Afro Nation and Afrochella
