Day 2 SLAVE CASTLES OF ELMINA AND CAPE COAST TOWN

After breakfast, depart for a scenic drive to the Central Region of Ghana, the breathtaking home of Cape Coast and Elmina castles. As you leave the hustle and bustle of Accra for the slower, more laid back pace of the lush Central Region, you will notice the backdrop transform before your eyes.

Upon arrival at your hotel, check in and settle into your ocean-view suite.  Visit two of the most infamous slave castles in Ghana. The first, Cape Coast Castle, built in 1653 by Sweden and later taken over by the British, is also home to the West African Historical Museum. The second, Elmina Castle, was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and was formerly known as St. George’s Castle.  Overnight at your hotel.

Lodging: Hotel in Elmina

Day 3 CANOPY WALK IN KAKUM NATIONAL PARK

Awaken to the gorgeous sunrise and enjoy breakfast at the beachfront restaurant of your resort. You will be awestruck by the beauty of the grounds, but don’t forget to ask for your fresh coconut drink (cut from the trees on the premises).

After a breakfast, check-out and depart to explore Kakum National Park, one of West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests. Kakum consists of over 360sq km of diverse and dense vegetation, and is a blend of true rainforest and semi deciduous forest. Kakum is home to over 40 large mammals, 400 bird species and an array of butterflies, flora and fauna. The most popular attraction, however, is the canopy walkway. Made up of seven bridges extending 330m, the walkway hangs 40m above the forest floor. You will have the choice to traverse the walkway or enjoy a 2km nature walk through the forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they offer. Depart for Busua Beach Resort, built on a beautiful stretch of Ghana’s most pristine coastline.

Lodging: Busua

Day 4 NZULEZU — FORT APPOLONIA

After breakfast, depart on a trip to Nzulezu a unique village built on water. Nzulezu is built entirely on stilts over an open lake fed by two rivers. According to oral history and tradition, villagers migrated several centuries ago from Walata, a city in the ancient Ghana Empire, which fell in the year 1250. Ancestors of the village believe that villagers were led to this secure place by a snail. Nzulezo is an Nzema word meaning “built on water.”

After an hour’s drive through a rubber plantation, enjoy a five-kilometer ride on the lake in a local dugout canoe (life jackets are provided). The ride takes you through areas of marsh and open pools fringed with palm thickets and opens out into the vast expanse of the lake. A variety of birds are often seen emerging from the reeds or sitting on the low hanging branches of the surrounding jungle. Upon arrival in the village, interact with the locals and explore the adjacent area. Notice the solid wood construction of the houses and the raffia walkways.

Later, visit Fort Appolonia located in Beyin. This fort was built in 1768 by English merchants and transferred to the Dutch in 1868 who renamed it after their King Willem III. The Dutch held it until 1872, when it was turned over to the British by a treaty. Lodging: Busua Beach Resort

Day 5 BUSUA — ACCRA CITY TOUR

After an early breakfast, depart your hotel for a return drive to Accra. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch on your own in a traditional Ghanaian restaurant. Later, embark on a sightseeing city tour of Accra. You will drive through the administrative and economic districts of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Over 100 years-old, Accra has a blend of colonial and contemporary architecture which symbolizes the cultural mix of the city.

You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, where Dr. Dubois (an academic and civil rights champion) spent two years working on a Pan-African encyclopedia under the invitation Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana’s first President). There, you will be treated to a guided tour through Dr. DuBois’ research library. You will also make stops at Independence/Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. The square marks the point where three ex-military men tried to present grievances to the colonial governor and were shot during a peaceful demonstration. Nkrumah Memorial Park was created to commemorate Ghana’s founding father. To the east of the square you will also get a view of Osu (formerly Christiansborg) Castle, the previous seat of the Ghanaian Presidency.
Conclude your day’s with a trip to the Arts Center – a large arts and crafts market where you can find handicrafts from all over Ghana and West Africa.Lodging: Hotel in Accra
